Career Fair for High School Students

Area high school sophomores will participate in a career fair Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at the Agricenter in Perry.

The 15th annual Dr. Maxx Career Fair Scavenger Hunt will take place in the McGill Marketplace building from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m, a Houston County Board of Education news release says.

Approximately 1,000 students from Houston, Dooly, Peach and Pulaski counties will attend.

The purpose of the event is to help students plan for their future.

The career fair will inform them about job opportunities and the requirements for different occupations, providing insight into a variety of careers.

Students will visit exhibits and participate in a scavenger hunt.  About 75 business partners will represent numerous career fields such as legal services, government, law enforcement, the arts, communications, manufacturing, transportation, construction, education, hospitality, health services, agriculture, information technology, scientific research, business, finance, retail and the military.  For the scavenger hunt, students will ask mystery guests specific questions to guess the mystery guests’ careers.  Suggested questions include required skills, typical day and earning potential.

Each high school is scheduled for about one hour.  Houston County High and Perry High sophomores will arrive at the career fair at 8 a.m.

Houston County Career Academy and Veterans High students will begin their career exploration at 9:10 a.m.  And Northside High and Warner Robins High are scheduled at 10:20 a.m.

The Dr. Maxx Career Fair Scavenger Hunt is a collaborative effort by the Middle Georgia Education and Career Partnership’s four-county consortium of Dooly, Houston, Peach and Pulaski school systems.  For more information, contact Barbara Wall, Director of Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education for Houston County, at Barbara.Wall@hcbe.net or 478-988-6222, extension 10226.  Or contact LaToya Lawson at Middle Georgia Technical College at 478-988-6800, extension 5002, or llawson@middlegatech.edu.
