Celebrating School Counselors
Events, Schools

National School Counseling Week will be celebrated Feb. 7 – 11, 2011.

Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), the nationwide celebration highlights the tremendous impact and contributions of school counselors as they work to help students achieve success at school and plan for a career, a Houston County Board of Education news release says.

About 70 certified, experienced educators serve as counselors in the Houston County School System.  Counselors have a master’s degree or higher in guidance and counseling.

These professionals deliver a comprehensive school counseling program.  They help students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents, focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ personal, educational and career development.

They also form partnerships with parents to help them overcome challenges as they raise their children.  Graduation coaches compliment the services provided by school counselors and their work with at-risk students.

Superintendent Dr. Robin Hines commented, “Our counselors do a great job and are an integral part of the educational process in our system.  Their duties go well beyond curriculum and educational planning; they remove barriers every day from the paths of our students to provide them with the best opportunities for success.  Our counselors are the best one could find anywhere!”
