Census: Minority Population Growing

Houston County's minority population has reached 40.4 percent, according to Census Bureau statistics and USATODAY research. That is the percentage of the population in the county who is another ethnicity other than white non-hispanic.

Houston County Teachers of the Year Announced

Houston County schools have selected their 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year.  The honorees will be recognized at the system’s Opening Session on July 25, 2013, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter’s Miller-Murphy-Howard Building in Perry.  The 2013-2014 Houston County Teacher of the Year and four finalists will be announced for the first time at Opening Session.

HCCA STEM Summer Camp Underway

HCCA STEM Summer Camp Underway
The Houston County Career Academy is holding a free STEM Summer Camp for ninth graders (rising tenth graders) enrolled in the Houston County School System. The camp is taking place this week through June 7 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Academy.  

Approximately 40 students are registered.  The camp will expose them to nontraditional career opportunities with the girls studying engineering and the guys concentrating on the medical field. Sessions include guest speakers from various areas of medicine. There are also hands-on activities and each student will become CPR certified.  Camp summaries follow.

Girl’s Camp:  Day 1 - Electronic Engineering & Green Technology; Day 2 - Mechanical Engineering; Day 3 - Aerospace Engineering; Day 4 - Civil Engineering; and Day 5 - Chemical Engineering.
