HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – Special Olympics will be held May 4, 2012, 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.  Students in grades Kindergarten through 12 participate.  The event begins with a short program welcoming the student athletes, parents and teachers, followed by the lighting of the Olympic torch to begin the games.

Awards are given throughout the day.  Approximately 350 students from 13 schools have registered to compete in track and field events such as the 50-meter walk/run, soccer skills, running/standing long jump and wheelchair events.  About 200 volunteers will help run the competitions, cheer on the competitors and present medals at the awards ceremony.  Some of the volunteers are high school students who partner in school with their special needs classmates.

When not competing, the students will enjoy “Fun City.”  There will be face painting, dancing, a big slide, arts and crafts and more for the young student athletes.

Dr. Shirley Randall, Local Special Olympics Coordinator, said, “This is an exciting event for our students, parents and teachers.  I look forward to it every year!  We are thankful for our community volunteers from Robins Air Force Base 5th Combat Communications Group, the 5th Mob, Frito-Lay, and Partners Club members from Houston County High, Northside High, Perry High, Warner Robins High and Huntington Middle.  Flint Energies also contributed toward the purchase of shirts for the event.”
