Houston County High School’s FFA team won first place at the Dairy Cattle Evaluation Career Development Event held in April.  The team will represent Georgia at the national competition this October.

That's according to a Houston County Board of Education news release.

The winning team consists of (pictured from left):  Bradley Norris, Ryan Powell and Emilie Johnson.  Advisor Dr. Ronnie Thomas is pictured, too.  Emilie also won State High Individual.  The team and Emilie each received a plaque, and both Emilie and Dr. Thomas were presented a $1oo cash award.  The team also received $2,000 travel money to attend the National FFA Convention.

“Four years of hard work and dedication paid off for this team,” commented Dr. Thomas.  “These students placed second last year.  They could have called it quits, but they worked hard and ended their high school career with a state championship.  I could not be prouder!”

Houston County High had a second team also compete, and this team won third place at the junior level.  Winners of the Dairy Cattle Evaluation Career Development Event were recognized at the 83rd State FFA Convention held at the Macon Coliseum April 28 - 30, 2011.  This event emphasizes skills in dairy cattle selection and herd management and provides experience in the evaluation of dairy cattle type, production records and dairy herd management.  Participants evaluate dairy animals and place by type, verbalize reasons for their placing and take a written test.
