Westfield Baseball Welcomes Alum Jeff Barfield

The Westfield School and its varsity baseball team and coaches will recognize former Westfield pitcher Jeff Barfield, a 2006 graduate and four-year varsity baseball letterman, at its pre-season home baseball game Thursday, Feb 24 at 5 p.m.

Barfield signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers following his collegiate career at the University of Florida where he pitched in the 2010 College World Series.

6th Annual MGTC Foundation Golf Tournament

6th Annual MGTC Foundation Golf Tournament

The Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation is set to host its 6th annual Golf Tournament to support student scholarships at MGTC.

The event will take place April 1 at Houston Lake Country Club in Perry.

The tournament will begin with lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun scramble at noon. Hole sponsorships, including a four-person team, are available for $1,000. Corporate sponsorships, which include entry for two teams, are $5,000.

All sponsorships include entry fees, lunch, and golf shirts for the team.

Over $4,000 in prizes will be awarded at the tournament, including prizes for long drives and closest to the pin.

Additionally, special prizes will be available for a hole-in-one and a 50/50 raffle will be available.

The MGTC Foundation’s Golf Tournament is one of three annual events responsible for raising funds to provide students with scholarships.

Veterans High Hosts Quiz Bowl

The Elementary School Academic Bowl will be held tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 24, at Veterans High School. 

Eighteen teams will compete throughout the day, culminating in a single elimination competition that will begin around 12:30 p.m. 

The final rounds will end about 1:30 p.m. and the winning team will be announced.

The Elementary School Academic Bowl is only at the local level. 

This Bowl helps prepare the young students for the Middle School Academic Bowl Competition. Earlier this year the Middle School Academic Bowl Competitions took place at three levels: local, regional and state.

Veterans High is located at 340 Piney Grove Rd. in Kathleen.

Perry Players to Perform 'Father of the Bride'

Perry Players Community Theatre will present Father of the Bride from March 11 until March 20 each night at 8 p.m.


Ticket prices are $12.00 for adults  and $6.00 for youth except Wednesday and Sunday when they are $10.00 and $5.00.

Reservations are recommended and may be made beginning the Monday prior to the opening of the play.

Kings Chapel Elem. Hosts February Fling

Kings Chapel Elementary will hold a February Fling this Saturday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the school. 

This event will feature carnival games, inflatables, a silent auction, bake walk concessions and more. 

Students, parents, friends, family, and community members are invited to attend.  Wristbands cost $7 for children ages four and up and include games and inflatables. 

Adults and children under four are admitted free. 

Kings Chapel Elementary is located at 460 Arena Rd in Perry.

Chambers Honor 2011 STAR Students and Teachers

The Perry and Robins Regional Chambers of Commerce will host the annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Student and STAR Teacher recognition program on Monday Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. 

The program will be held at the Houston County Board of Education’s central office in Perry.

 During the program, STAR students and their teachers will be recognized, and the district winner will be announced for the first time.  The 2011 STAR Students and Teachers from the Houston County School System are:

Houston County High: 

Vania (Roo-Ra) Lee and teacher Margaret Molyson, Northside High: 

John Anthony Aspinall and teacher Patricia Ogletree;

Perry High:  Avery Roman Jones and teacher Emily Heath;

Perry Idol Finalists & Alternates Announced

Perry Idol Finalists & Alternates Announced

The Perry Idol Committee of the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce announced its 2011 Perry Idol Finalists & Alternats.

The Perry Idol Finale will be held Saturday, March 19th, 6 p.m. at the River Church in Kathleen.

That's according to a Perry Chamber news release.

Tickets will be sold at the Perry Chamber in advance $7 for Adults, $3 for Children. Cost the night of the event will be $10 for Adults, $5 for children. Call (478) 987-1234 for details.

In the Adult Category (Ages 15 and up) are: Aveon Williams, Ben Robbins, Chad Davis, Dawn Weaks, Gina Hodges, Jessica Davis, Jill Davis, Kerrence Thomas, Mikanell Rodriguez, Morgan James, Sam Fisher and Wesley Willis, Jr. The two alternates that were chosen were Samantha Bartlette and Taylor Dixon.
