Good Life Organizing: Visual Clutter and Shopping
Good Life Organizing: Visual Clutter and Shopping

Recently I took my daughter to one of our favorite department stores for a little summer clothes shopping. While she browsed in the juniors department, I made my way to the ladies section. What I saw stopped me in my tracks - shelf after shelf of clothes strewn about and in a big jumbled mess. Not a pretty sight. It was worse than I have seen after a Black Friday sale.

This was so unusual for this particular store that it took me aback. One of the reasons I prefer shopping at department stores as opposed to thrift stores or discount stores is that I can find multiple sizes and colors of the same style. In short it makes my shopping experience easier. (I've been known to straighten a shelf in a bookstore or rearrange the jeans so they are in proper size order - good thing I do what I do for a living, right?!) Usually I can find more items that I like than I really need to buy but not this day. It really turned me off and was a negative experience.

This is just one small example of how visual clutter can negatively affect you. Because what I saw was a jumbled mess, it was very difficult for me to concentrate on choosing the clothes. It's the same in your home. If you can't easily locate what you need in a jumble of stuff, you are going to get frustrated.

Has the order or disorder of a store ever affected how you shop?
