Scamming targeting Byron drivers

Scamming targeting Byron drivers

Byron police say they're looking for two men they say are targeting travelers and the elderly with a car-repair scam.

A police news release says the men spray brake fluid behind people's back tires. They tell the drivers they have a brake-line leak and that the car is dangerous to drive.

They also tell the drivers that they are mechanics at Jeff Smith Ford and Chevrolet in Byron, and one presents a fake ID.

Houston County's special athletes show off basketball skills

Special athletes from Houston County's middle and high schools took part in their Special Olympics Friday.

Veterans High School held the Winter Games in the gym. This year, 350 students signed up for the basketball competition.

The Houston Special Olympic Games happen three times a year, in fall, winter and spring.

Brenda Arnett, an adaptive physical education specialist for Houston County explained why the games are worth having every year, "It means so much to them. That's all they talk about. They drive the teachers crazy."

After playing as a team, the players practiced their dribbling, shooting and passing skills.

Leslie Allen, a local coordinator for the games, said, "It feels really great because our participation has increased. When students participate in Special Olympics, it helps the student physically, but it also helps the students grow socially and emotionally."
