Setting Your Child Up for Success This School Year

Setting Your Child Up for Success This School Year

As the summer break draws to a close, parents and children across Middle Georgia are going through the pre-school rituals of buying backpacks and school supplies and wondering what the new school year will bring.  The crazy routine of back-to-school can derail even the most organized, stable household.  Taking a little time now can help set your stellar student up for success this school year.

Create Routines

Does your child do his homework as soon as he gets home or does he zone out by watching TV and playing video games before doing his homework?  Find what works for your child and stick to it.  Morning routines are also important to be sure everyone gets out of the house on time and with a bare minimum of bedlam.  The night before lay out clothes, pack the lunch boxes and be sure the backpacks are packed up and ready to go including all completed homework assignments.

Houston County High School’s FFA team won first place at the Dairy Cattle Evaluation Career Development Event held in April.  The team will represent Georgia at the national competition this October.

That's according to a Houston County Board of Education news release.

The winning team consists of (pictured from left):  Bradley Norris, Ryan Powell and Emilie Johnson.  Advisor Dr. Ronnie Thomas is pictured, too.  Emilie also won State High Individual.  The team and Emilie each received a plaque, and both Emilie and Dr. Thomas were presented a $1oo cash award.  The team also received $2,000 travel money to attend the National FFA Convention.

Today's Purge - Cookbooks

Today's Purge - Cookbooks

This summer I am trying to take advantage of some down time to declutter my own house. After having a discussion with my husband this weekend, we have decided our cookbook collection needs some serious purging.  Now don’t get me wrong, I love my cookbook collection as much as the next gal but my husband and I realized that we rarely ever refer to them anymore.

If we want a new recipe, we run the computer and browse AllRecipes.com or Food Network. If it’s a tried and true recipe that we love, it’s in my recipe card box.  There was a time when my husband loved to plan a holiday meal (yes, he really loves to cook but rarely has the time) with a stack of Southern Living cookbooks at his side, but that doesn’t happen anymore. He’s more likely to Google than browse.
