Students Receive Free Books at Kay Road Elementary | News
Students at Kay Road Elementary received a special treat from the Houston-Peach branch of the American Association of University Women.
The group gave away hundreds of books to students at the school in Byron.
It's part of the RIF program -- Reading is Fundamental.
The national organization lost funding from Congress a few years ago.
But the university women's group recently received a $2,500 grant from department store giant Macy's.
Volunteer and RIF coordinator Margaret Mathews says the look on children's faces after they pick out their book is priceless.
"Oh my gosh, it's the best thing to see those eyes light up , it's like their own and they realize it's more than what they do in school," said Mathews.
The group plans to make two book distributions this year. Mathews says the next will be announced in the fall.
