Smithsonian Exhibit Coming To Perry Saturday

New Harmonies, a traveling music exhibit from the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., will be in Perry. The exhibit will focus on some of the early traditions of American music.

At the Perry Arts Center, Sheila Jones and Ellie Loudermilk are some of the organizers that are preparing for this exhibit to come through.

"There will be 8 sections of panels that will be in the center of the room," said Sheila Jones of the Perry Area Convention Visitors Bureau. "It's very interactive and it has a lot of information that you would read and instruments that you would interact with."

Local Central Georgian music exhibits will share the space with the Smithsonian exhibits. Visitors could see local items like Rose Lane White Leavell's wedding dress to Chuck Leavell, a member of the Allman Brothers. They also could see a victrola that is over 100 years old.

"It's a wonderful thing that the Smithsonian is coming, but it's equally as wonderful that the locals brought out," said Loudermilk. "They've gone into their closet, so they have brought out memorabilia that we would have no idea of the roots of the music in this area."

The exhibit will be open to the public on Saturday, September 8th to October 20th.
