Chambers Honor STAR System Winners

Miriam Baker, a Warner Robins High School senior and Vania Lee, a Houston County High School senior, have been named the 2011 STAR Student System Winners for Houston County.

The announcement was made yesterday by the Perry and Robins Regional Chambers of Commerce, regional sponsors of the Houston County STAR program.

Baker, the daughter of Gary and Pamela Baker, selected Barbara Hilliard, AP Literature teacher at Warner Robins High School, as her STAR teacher.

Lee, the daughter of Jung Lee, selected Margaret Molyson, AP Chemistry at Houston County High School, as her STAR teacher.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, in its 53rd year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.

Since it inception, the STAR program has honored more than 22,500 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement.

To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

STAR begins each year in participating high schools throughout Georgia when the STAR student is named and chooses a STAR teacher to share in this recognition.

Every year the Perry Area and Robins Regional Chambers of Commerce recognize the students and their teachers at a reception which was held at Houston County Board of Education this year.

Winners from each school and their teachers receive a $500 savings bond from the Chambers and the System Winners receive an additional $500 savings bond. Miriam and Vania and their teachers Ms. Hilliard and Ms. Mollyson will now go onto compete at the regional level. Region winners compete for the honor of being named State PAGE STAR Student.

“We are very proud of both students and their academic excellence they exemplify,” said Ms. Smith.

The mission of the PAGE Foundation is to recruit, develop, retain and recognize outstanding teachers for all Georgia students. STAR is one of several programs of academic excellence sponsored by the Foundation. Other academic competitions include the PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon (GAD) and the PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades.

Through its sponsorship of Future Educators Association of Georgia (FEA Georgia), Student and professional learning, the PAGE Foundation works to recruit capable people to the teaching profession and provide career-long professional learning opportunities for educators.
