Tykes, Tots and Teens Consignment Sale Returns

The Tykes, Tots and Teens Consignment Sale returns to the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter this weekend.

The sale is open from August 10, 11 and 12. 

There will be items fro infants, kids, teens and expecting mothers. You'll find items like clothes, toys, books, strollers, high chairs, pack 'n' plays, bouncy seats, youth furniture and more.

The hours are:
Friday, August 9: 9-8
Saturday, August 10: 9-8
Sunday, August 11: 9-6 (closed 1-2 p.m. for Dollar Dash preparations)

Sunday is 50 percent off day from 9-6: any tag with a star or marked discount yes will be half price.

Dollar Dash: Sunday 2pm – 6pm, any tag with a large bold D or marked donate yes will be $1.

Tuesday marks Election Day.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

When you go to vote, be sure to take your Georgia license, passport or military photo ID. You'll need to show that before voting.

If you need to doublecheck your polling location, enter your information and the database will show you where you're registered.

Houston County Ranks Better Than Georgia Average in Unemployment

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the preliminary unemployment rates in Houston County is 7.4 percent for May.

That's below Georgia's overall unemployment rate of 8.9 percent.

Metro Macon rose to 9.4 percent in May, up three-tenths of a percentage point from 9.1 percent in April, a Georgia Department of Labor news release says.

The rate was 10.1 percent in May 2011. 

Overall, Georgia's unemployment rate remained unchanged from April to May in 2011 and is down from May 2010, where the unemployment rate was 9.8 percent.

Local Teacher Named Finalist for Presidential Award for Excellence

 

HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – Huntington Middle School science teacher Gwen McDade was honored as a Georgia Finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching 2011, for grades 7-12.  The award was presented jointly by the Georgia Department of Education and the National Science Foundation at the 2012 Georgia Science Teachers Association Awards Program held Feb. 17 at the Georgia Aquarium. 

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the highest recognition that a Kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.  Established by Congress in 1983, the award recognizes teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program rich in content to enhance student learning.

4th Annual Kody Lucas Birthday Blood Drive Set for July

In honor of Kody Lucas, the boy who passed of brain cancer in April of 2012, there will be a 4th annual blood drive in his honor at Rozar Park in Perry.

The goal is to collect 200 units of blood from this year's event. Community members are encouraged to participate. See the above flyer for details.
