Horne Named Outstanding Woman in Education

 

Linda Horne, Assistant Superintendent for School Operations, was presented Outstanding Woman in Education, award at the March 12, 2012, Board meeting.  She is one of 10 honorees statewide.  She is pictured with Vivian Childs who presented Horne with a plaque and bag of gifts. 

Childs organizes an annual event, It’s Time!” Unity Conference, to recognize exceptional female educators across the state.  “This award is designed to recognize those women who succeed in excellence, expertise, and extraordinary achievements in their school district,” said Childs.  “It is also designed to recognize those women who support the growth of the students in their schools by preparing them to excel in all areas.”

7th Annual Rescue Day to Feature Fun for Families and Pets

 

Fifteen animal rescue groups from around the Middle Georgia area are gathering together April 21 for the Seventh Annual Rescue Day at Tractor Supply Company in Byron, a Save a Pet news release says.

Along with the rescue groups, others are joining them to help get pets adopted, keeping your pet health and well trained, and sharing fun activities to do with your dog.

Along with pet adoptions, there will be a vaccination clinic, children’s fun dog show, pony rides, dog training demonstrations, dog cart demonstrations and rides and information about involved in pet therapy.

 This event is held quarterly to honor outstanding elementary and middle school students in the Perry Area. These students were presented their award at the Perry Welcome Center on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012.

Westfield School Announces New Athletic Director

 

The Westfield School is pleased to announce the appointment of James P. “Chip” Champion IV to the position of Athletic Director.  Champion is an experienced teacher, coach and athletic director having served in two GISA schools for the past sixteen years.  He comes to Westfield from Tiftarea Academy where he has served in numerous capacities for twelve years.  In addition he has served as assistant headmaster and as headmaster at Piedmont Academy.  A graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, Champion earned his Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Albany State University. 

“Chip Champion emerged as the candidate to bring experience, excitement, and energy to Westfield athletics.  His reputation as a coach, administrator, and role model for students makes him an excellent choice to lead Westfield’s athletic programs,” said Westfield Head of School Rachel S. Deems.

That starts at 8 a.m. at Perry City Hall in Council Chambers.

MOPS Consignment Sale Set for Saturday

The Warner Robins Mothers of Preschoolers, or MOPS, hold a consignment sale Saturday.

Sale goers will find children's spring and summer clothing and toys for sale

The sale runs from Friday and Saturday, March 23-24 at Southside Baptist Church in Kathleen.

On Friday, the consignment sale opens from 4-8 p.m.

Saturday the sale opens from 8-11 a.m.

The half-off sale is from 12-2 p.m. Saturday.

The church is located at 101 Bear Branch Rd.

Houston County Schools on State's Focus List

Houston County Schools on State's Focus List

The Georgia Department of Education has released a list of 156 schools labeled "focus schools" under the new accountability system.

In Houston County, Huntington Middle School, Perry and Northside High Schools, and Westside Elementary School were included.

According to the Georgia Department of Education, focus schools are those with a graduation rate of less than sixty percent over the last two years or with large gaps between highest and lowest achieving subgroups of students.
