GOP Host Fish Fry to Energize Conservative Base

The Republican National Convention starts August 27th, but Saturday in Perry some heavy GOP hitters came together for their annual Grand Ol' Fish Fry.

Formerly known as Sonny's Fish Fry, the gathering is meant to generate buzz about the upcoming convention and hear the concerns of the public.

Some pretty big names showed up to the fish fry, like Senator Johnny Isakson and Congressman Austin Scott.

Both said attending the event is incredibly important.

"Well for me, as a member of congress it gives you the opportunity to come in and listen to people, find out what's on their mind," says Scott. "When I came in people were expressing their discontent with some of the things that passed this week in Washington and that's one of the things that makes America great."

Houston Elects New School Board Member

The Houston County School Board got a new member Tuesday.

Dave McMahan will fill Toby Hill's District 7 seat, because Hill did not seek re-election.

Griff Clements, Dave McMahan and Andy Rodriguez were all vying for the open chair, but only one walked away with the seat.

13WMAZ's Jennifer Moulliet caught up with friends and supporters of Dave McMahan at Rusty's in downtown Perry.  The restaurant served as McMahan's campaign headquarters. Even Mayor Jimmy Faircloth showed his support.

Across the street, the Board of Election employees tallied the votes. Soon the votes were in for all twenty-three precincts.

McMahan received 6,884 votes and won the race with 50.53%.

Bumpy Campaign Trail for District 18 Seat

Senator Cecil Staton and his opponent Spencer Price say it's been a bumpy ride along the campaign trail for the District 18 seat.

Both agree on many of the issues facing central Georgia including healthcare, jobs, and the future of Robins Air Force Base, but they don't see eye to eye when it comes to campaign tactics.

Staton ran unopposed in 2006, 2008, and 2010.

Price says after several years in the military and working as an emergency room doctor that he wanted to continue serving but now on a political platform.

He also says he did not agree with the incumbent's behavior in office and that he's disturbed by reports that Staton allegedly sent out attack emails under a false name. He also expressed concern that Staton's company oews more that $50,000 to Georgia Southern University. Price believes Staton has continued that kind of behavior into the race.
