Senator Tolleson's Take on 'Crossover Day'

Senator Tolleson's Take on 'Crossover Day'

The Senate worked late on Thursday, revising and debating almost 30 bills before the midnight deadline of Crossover Day. Crossover Day is a rite of passage that all remaining Senate bills must go through before transferring to the opposite chamber – the House of Representatives.  If Senate Bills do not pass on Crossover Day, they are no longer considered a ‘live’ bill and must wait until 2014 for re-consideration.  Moving forward, we will begin taking up bills from the House and working on compromises between similar legislation in conference committees.

Senator Tolleson's Capitol Update

As we write this, the halls of the State Capitol are filled with the smell of peanut butter as today is Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, one of the most anticipated days under the Gold Dome!  PB+J Day brings a smile to the faces of legislators, staff and lobbyists throughout the building.  Our thanks to the Georgia Agribusiness Council and Georgia Peanut Commission for their sponsorship of this great event.  If you have never had a “fried PB+J”, you must treat yourself- you will be glad you did!

Senator Tolleson: Report from the State Capitol

Senator Tolleson: Report from the State Capitol

In week two of the legislative session, the Senate did not convene, instead it was a week dedicated to budget hearings and getting out around the community.  As always, I am dedicated to my responsibilities at the Capitol, but it’s the time I spend listening to my constituents that I enjoy the most.

Thursday, I was happy to welcome nurses from District 20 to celebrate “Nurses Day at the Capitol”.  More than 1,000 nurses from across the state met and developed legislative ideas to make their jobs more effective and less restricted by government regulations.  I had the pleasure of meeting with several nurses that expressed concerns, ideas and praises for the legislature.  These men and women have dedicated their lives to taking care of others and I remain committed to protecting their rights to access the proper tools, incentives and technology to perform their job to its full potential.

Houston County Jobless Rate Released

Houston County Jobless Rate Released

The jobless rate for Houston County in December 2012 was 7.4 percent.

That's 1.4 percent lower than the state's unemployment rate of 8.8 percent

According to a state news release, unemployment rose to 9.2 percent from November's 8.7 percent rate, but it was down from December 2011 when the rate was 9.5 percent.

Officials claim the rise comes from a combination of factors, including a "slight increase" in new layoffs and a reduction in the area work force.

The uptick reflects a similar statewide trend. However, the jobless rate across Georgia only rose one-tenth of percentage point while metro Macon's rate jumped five-tenths of a percentage point.
