The Houston County School System winners of its Young Georgia Authors’ Writing Competition in the spring.  This annual contest is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education for students in grades K-12.

Local winners advanced to the Middle Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) competition in hopes of advancing to the state competition.  Middle Georgia RESA consists of the following counties:  Bibb, Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach and Twiggs.  These winners will be announced in July.  

The young authors submitted original essays, stories or poems on any subject matter.  Houston County’s winners are listed by grade, along with the title of their essay or story and school. 

  • Kindergarten – Hannah Shillcutt, My Scratched Toe, David Perdue Primary
  • 1st grade – Anson Nix, Snow Mountain, Centerville Elementary
  • 2nd grade – Jessica Brown, The Last Dog, Bonaire Elementary
  • 3rd grade – Andre Thomas, Jr., Love At First Site, Westside Elementary
  • 4th grade – Kyzah Hammonds, Sweet Surprise, Westside Elementary
  • 5th grade – Colbert Flagg, III, Arrgh… (A Pirate’s Story), Centerville Elementary
  • 6th grade – Nick Talati, The Wave, Huntington Middle
  • 7th grade – Ally White, Grandma, Warner Robins Middle
  • 8th grade – Riley J. Wise, Afterlife, Bonaire Middle
  • 9th grade – Haley Talati, One More Day, Warner Robins High
  • 10th grade – Eli Guidry, Or Maybe It was Protons…, Perry High
  • 11th grade – Emily Deyton, The Week I Almost Had to Work, Veterans High
  • 12th grade – Annie Sinatra, What It’s Like, Veterans High

                    The purpose of the Young Georgia Authors’ Writing Contest is to:

·               encourage students to develop writing that represents their best efforts;

·               provide a context for schools to support and celebrate student writing successes; and

·               encourage and recognize student achievement in writing throughout Georgia.
