Eight Houston County 4-H’ers spent the past few months learning all they can about forestry and forestry related activities in preparation for the District Forestry Field Day.  The contest was held at IP Super Tree Nursery in Shellman, Georgia on September 1, 2011.

The Junior team of Cassidy Reynolds, David Jakes, Daniel Bodien, Anna Vorisek and Manuel Becerra placed second in the district competition. David Jakes was 3rd High Scoring Individual.

The Senior team of Samantha Becerra, Katy Vorisek and Ana Jakes also placed second in the district competition, qualifying for the State Competition. The State Competition is on September 24th at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia.

Stacey Ellison, Houston County 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent and Kayleigh Sullivan, 4-H Program Assistant served as coaches for the team.

According to Ellison, one of the many purposes of Forestry Field Day is “to gain a better understanding of and appreciation for our forest resources and how they contribute to our economy and quality of life.”   At the contest, the 4-H’ers competed in land measurement, insect and disease identification, dendrology, forest evaluation and tree volume estimation.

4-H Forestry Field Day is sponsored by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service and the Georgia Pacific Corporation.
