Two Houston Schools Win Fitness Awards

Linwood Elementary and Perry Primary schools both won the Governor's Georgia SHAPE Honor Roll program.

The schools won the awards based on student fitness tests in the 2012-2013 school year, according to a release.

Kids were tested in a one-mile run, curl-ups, push-ups, back-saver sit and reach, and height/weight.

Georgia SHAPE is an initiative to improve the health and fitness habits of children throughout the state.

Ellis Grocery is in Grovania, located in Houston County, just down the road from Elko.

The Atlanta-Journal also captured a moment there in 1972, of Rex Ellis, who was 10 years old at the time.

When you child comes home from school, does she know where her backpack and lunch box live?  These items should have a regular landing zone.  It could be a hook next to the child’s desk in her room or in a cubby by the entry door.  Having a consistent place to put these items will make them easier to find and cause fewer headaches during that mad dash out the door in the morning.

Grant to Expand Fruit and Vegetable Offering at Schools

Grant to Expand Fruit and Vegetable Offering at Schools

HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – The Houston County School Nutrition is expanding its Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant piloted at Pearl Stephens Elementary last year by adding Lindsey Elementary and Westside Elementary.  This grant provides funds to serve fresh produce in classrooms.  Students last year had the opportunity to taste starfruit, snap peas, jicama and a wide variety of exotic fruits and vegetables as well as items on grocery store shelves.

The overall goal of the program is to expose children to new foods and to teach healthy lifestyle habits.  This year children in three schools will have a chance to try healthy snacks twice a week.  To see the program, visit Lindsey Elementary on a Wednesday or and Friday, around 1:00 p.m.  Lindsey’s children will sample a fruit or vegetable after lunch, with times varying by class.
