Bonaire Middle FCCLA Wins $1K for Career Project

HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – Bonaire Middle School won the 2013 National Middle School Career Connection Award, sponsored by Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The chapter was presented $1,000 and a plaque at the 2013 FCCLA National Leadership Conference held in July in Nashville, Tenn. 

Career Connection is a program designed to prepare students for career success.  The award recognizes chapters that conduct projects to help young people link skills in careers, families and their communities.  Bonaire Middle’s FCCLA chapter helped host a school Career Day for 235 eighth graders. More than 30 exhibitors and guest speakers participated.  The project was titled "Tying It All Together." 

Operation Back to School in Full Force

School is back in session for most students in just a few weeks. To help children in Central Georgia, 13WMAZ is teaming up with Communities in Schools and Walmart to sponsor Operation Back to School.

A number of 13WMAZ staff members will be in several locations to help collect school supplies.

Operation Back to School is a school supply drive that directly benefits kids in need in our local communities. Through Aug. 18, donation barrels or bins will be located at the front of Walmart stores in Macon, Warner Robins, Forsyth, Perry, Milledgeville and Dublin. We need your help to fill them all up!

Simply pick up a few extra school supplies while you shop and drop them in the barrels on your way out. All supplies go to children in the community in which they are collected.

Community Forum On Twiggs Virtual School Program to be Held

Community Forum On Twiggs Virtual School Program to be Held

A community forum on the Twiggs County Public Schools Virtual Program will be held July 27 at 10 a.m. at the Dry Branch Fire Station.  That's according to a news release sent out by the school district Thursday.  The Twiggs online school, beginning Fall 2013, is open to students in Twiggs, Bleckley, Wilkinson, Bibb, Houston, Baldwin, Jones, and Peach Counties.

The online school is free and will be hosted by K12, the instruction provider for the Georgia Cyber Academy and other online programs in Georgia.  For more information, call the Twiggs Board of Education Office at 478-945-327.

Perry Kiwanis Club Awards Scholarship to Two

The Perry Kiwanis Club recently awarded its yearly scholarships to two local students. This scholarship is designed to pay $1,500 per year over the next four years. Students are selected on a basis of scholastic achievement, extracurricular activity, and financial need. They are required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average and be a full time student to maintain the award all four years. Started in the early 1980's by Kiwanis Club member Dr. A. G. Hendricks, the fund has grown over the years through donations, gifts, and fundraising projects of the Perry Kiwanis Club.  Pictured are our two winners.

Houston County's Young Georgia Authors

The Houston County School System winners of its Young Georgia Authors’ Writing Competition in the spring.  This annual contest is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education for students in grades K-12.

Local winners advanced to the Middle Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) competition in hopes of advancing to the state competition.  Middle Georgia RESA consists of the following counties:  Bibb, Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach and Twiggs.  These winners will be announced in July.  

The young authors submitted original essays, stories or poems on any subject matter.  Houston County’s winners are listed by grade, along with the title of their essay or story and school.

Houston County Teachers of the Year Announced

Houston County schools have selected their 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year.  The honorees will be recognized at the system’s Opening Session on July 25, 2013, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter’s Miller-Murphy-Howard Building in Perry.  The 2013-2014 Houston County Teacher of the Year and four finalists will be announced for the first time at Opening Session.

Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.
